Further Insights: Parenting Labels




Sometimes I'll use a trendy parenting label to shortcut the description of a particular parenting type. I thought I'd toss out a few here, starting with four that are in my book, Unison Parenting.


Loving and Firm - The ideal parenting style, high in love and support for children while also high in controlling behavior through limits and rules.

Dominant - A harmful style, high in controlling behavior through rules but low in love and support.

Permissive - The polar opposite of Dominant (but not necessarily much better), it's low in limits and rules but high in love and support.

Neglectful - Low in limits, low in love and support.


Here are other parenting labels that you'll find out there. I'll sort them into the four styles above when possible.


Lighthouse - Check in and communicate with their children, and offer guidance and wisdom. They let their children know where they stand, and don't chase them down to enforce rules. As I understand it, this is a less proactive version of the Loving and Firm parenting style and can veer toward the Neglectful style.

Helicopter - Hovers and is over-involved, stunting the child's growth even into adulthood. This parent could either be the Dominant or the Permissive style.

Lawnmower - An extreme form of helicoptering, this parent mows down obstacles that may cause discomfort, challenges or struggles. I could see this from a Dominant or a Permissive parent.

Free-Range - Designed to counter Helicopter parenting, this style goes to the other extreme in allowing a child tremendous free rein. It has been criticized as the Neglectful style.

Tiger - A parent who puts excellence in academics and chosen extracurriculars above leisure time. This parent is Dominant.

Attachment - This term regards the diaper years, when a parent desires close contact between baby and caregiver through baby wearing, breastfeeding and co-sleeping.

Elephant - This labels an Attachment parent that continues the style through age five or beyond. This parent does not raise their voice and does provide encouragement. They tend toward the Permissive style.
